Crews from Berks, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties were on the scene at the Reading Alloys factory on West Penn Avenue in Robesonia in response to the heavy fire around 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 3, according to the Western Berks Fire Department.

Reading Alloy manufactures and sells metal powders and other materials such as aluminum, copper, and zinc alloys, its website says.

At least 100 first responders carefully battled the blaze over six hours, knowing the hazardous materials are highly reactive to water, they said.

Though injuries were initially reported, officials say, firefighters were treated on the scene for heat exhaustion.
